Who We Are
The Interdependence Literacy Project seeks to teach children about the interdependence of their lives with others. Through exploring the food production system and getting to know actual people involved in feeding their community, children come to understand that their lives are connected to those of countless others beyond their immediate experience. They develop not only a conceptual understanding of where their food comes from but a personal awareness of their reliance on others—quite often others who are much like themselves. Learning about interdependence helps children develop empathy, gratitude, and care for the many beings, both human and nonhuman, that help to sustain their lives. In turn, they come to consider the impact of their own lives on others and bring a greater sense of responsibility to the world they create going forward.

“Without interdependence, nothing could exist.”
